Public Interest Law Project at Lewis & Clark Law School
Advocating for Justice Since 1990
Founded in 1990, the Public Interest Law Project at Lewis & Clark Law School stands as a testament to the commitment of nurturing future leaders in public interest law. At its core, PILP is not just a student-run organization; it's a beacon for those aspiring to make a tangible difference through legal avenues. Public interest law, the heart of PILP's mission, transcends profit-driven motives, focusing instead on advancing justice, enhancing public welfare, and staunchly protecting individual rights and specific causes.
Our attorneys-in-the-making are dedicated to diverse fields, from civil and criminal legal services to nonprofit and government agency work. They are lobbyists championing rights and protectors of public interests, driven not by political leanings but by a universal quest for justice, fairness, and public protection. This ethos is not just about pursuing a career; it's about a lifelong commitment to ensuring access to justice for all, regardless of background or financial status.
The PILP Annual Auction: A Tradition of Empowerment and Community Engagement
The highlight of PILP's efforts is our Annual Auction, the primary fundraiser that galvanizes the Portland community in a unified goal. This event is crucial in funding two key programs: the Summer Award and Loan Repayment Assistance Programs.
The Summer Award Program is a testament to our commitment to practical, on-the-ground change. Since its inception, we have supported over 380 students, enabling them to contribute more than 100,000 hours to public interest law work nationwide, at no cost to their employers.
Meanwhile, the Loan Repayment Assistance Program eases the financial burden on our alumni, empowering them to serve in various critical sectors, from human rights to environmental conservation, without the looming stress of student loans.
